"Pet" Rabbits

Rabbits are growing in popularity.  They are inexpensive, easy to maintain, prolific, clean and do not bark or crow.  There are forty-five recognized breeds ranging from 20-pound giants to 2-pound dwarfs.  Some breeds include as many as fifteen varieties of color or patterns.

We raise Mini Rex, Lionhead, Dutch and Flemish Giant rabbits.  In addition to the rabbits produced for the pet market, we also raise Tennessee Redback rabbits for the hunt training market.

Mini Rex rabbits are a dwarf rabbit and weigh 2 to 4 pounds.  They have many varieties including blue, californian, castor, chinchilla, lynx, opal, red, seal, tortoise, white and broken group.  They are popular because of  their coats and many colors.
Lionheads are an exciting new rabbit recognized in England but not yet by the American Rabbit Breeders Association.  Lionheads have erect ears and weigh 3-3/4 pounds.  Both bucks and does have a mane of wool encircling their head.
Our rabbits are raised in self-cleaning wire hutches.  Droppings and urine fall right through to the ground.  They have complete ventilation.  Feeders take up no space inside the hutches and can be filled from the outside.  We also use a watering system eliminating the need to fill individual bottles or crocks daily.

Domestic rabbits produced in backyards and in commercial rabbitries are good to eat.  The meat of a rabbit is all white and fine grained.  It has more protein than beef, pork, lamb and chicken.  It also has a lower percentage of fat, less cholesterol and fewer calories than most other meats.  Rabbit meat can be breaded, fried, broiled, baked or barbecued.  Large rabbits are often roasted.  People who live in Italy, the Ukraine, France and Spain consume the most rabbit meat.  One doe can produce 70 - 95 pounds of edible meat each year - - about nine times her own weight.  As land for livestock  becomes increasingly scarce and the demand for grain increases, rabbits will become more popular in the United States.

Rabbits are also used in medical and pharmaceutical laboratories and as mittens, muffs, angora sweaters, toys, hats, collars, cuffs and coats.

Gardeners also beg for their manure.  Rabbit manure contains higher proportions of nitrogen and phosphorus than many other manures.  It also has more potash than most.  It will not burn plants even when applied fresh.  Rose growers especially love rabbit manure for their plants.

Dutch rabbits originated in Holland and are another one of the oldest known breeds.  They come in a variety of colors such as black, blue, chocolate, gray, steel and tortoise.  The ideal senior weight of bucks and does is 4.5 pounds.  As a meat rabbit, they carry a lot of meat on their compact frame and there is little lost in dressing out.
No rabbit manure is available for sale.  All manure is used on our farm as an economic way to fertilize our pastures.
Flemish Giant rabbits should be as large as possible, have powerful, massive build, but also must be properly proportioned and well-balanced.  They come in a variety of colors, black, blue, fawn, light gray, sandy, steel gray and white.  Bucks weigh over 13 pounds while the does are 14 pounds and over.
